Wini Schaedel has received notification that she has achieved board certified
in Advanced Diabetes Management. This new multidisciplinary credential, the
advanced diabetes manager, has been developed by the American Association of
Diabetes Educators (AADE) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC),
in collaboration with the American Dietetic Association, the American Diabetes
Association, and the American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA).
The credential, designated as BC-ADM, is conferred upon successful completion
of an exam to registered dietitians, registered nurses and registered
pharmacists who hold advanced degrees and meet experience requirements.
The exam is based on the scope and standards of practice approved by the
governing agencies of the sponsoring organizations and defines advanced diabetes
management knowledge and skills associated with improved outcomes.
The exam focuses on diabetes clinical management across the
lifespan—from infancy to senior citizens. It covers the glycemic and
nonglycemic abnormalities of type 1, type 2, gestational diabetes and impaired
glucose tolerance. It addresses individuals, families and/or support systems,
groups, and communities.
Candidates for the exam must have knowledge and skills in
performing complete and/or focused assessments and in recognizing and
prioritizing complex data in order to identify the needs of patients with
diabetes. Competence in advanced clinical diabetes management affords an
increased complexity of decision making which expands the traditional discipline
specific practice. Research, publications, mentoring and continuing professional
development are also expected skill sets that are required to successfully
achieve the advanced diabetes management credential.
Wini has been working in diabetes education for over 20 years and in nursing
for over 30 years. She presently works with diabetes patients across the
life span in an advanced practice role in medical clinics and hospitals in
Salina, Beloit and Hill City Kansas. She regularly consults with
hospitals, clinics, long term care facilities and home health care agencies
across Kansas and frequently lectures across the Midwest.
Wini developed and coordinated the Partners in Care Diabetes Program in
Manhattan, Kansas until December 1998. Under her leadership, the program
received its initial recognition from the American Diabetes Association in 1995
and again in 1998.
Wini is licensed as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in
the state of Kansas. She is also a board certified diabetes educator
(CDE).
She is a member of the American Nurses Association, the American Diabetes
