DIABETES AND AGINGA Practical
Approach to Diabetes Management in the Elderly COURSE
DESCRIPTION:
Just
because a person is advanced in years is neither the reason nor the excuse for
the person to receive anything less than the absolute best health care for their
diabetes. Although aging can have
limitations, these people have too many places to go, things to do, and people
to see. Controlling diabetes will
help keep the spring in their step well into their golden years.
Many complication of diabetes are preventable and many others are
treatable, so it is possible to enjoy a high quality of life into the 80’s and
90’s. This
course will explore the evolution of diabetes care as it relates to the elderly,
especially in long term care facilities. Tools
and technology to be discussed include nutrition guidelines and choices as
carbohydrate counting, numerous medication choices and combinations of oral
diabetes medications and insulin, glucose monitors, wound care and sick days,
and new administrative devices and aides. For
any approach to be successful, a
concerted effort must be made by the entire health care team to coordinate a
