DIABETES AND PREGNANCY

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  As a health care provider, you feel the frustrations of shortened hospital stays and shorter appointment times. You need to ensure your client has all the tools they need to manage their diabetes care. You need strategies for helping patients effectively self-manage their diabetes, identifying potential problems and enhancing your skills for problem solving challenging situations.

The outcome of pregnancy, when complicated by pre-existing diabetes or gestational diabetes, can be significantly influenced by management of blood glucose levels. This presentation will include a discussion of both pregnancy complications caused by pre-existing diabetes and gestational diabetes. The screening criteria and pathophysiology of both conditions will be explored. High glucose levels exacerbate possible complications. Management of diabetes in pregnancy focuses attention on nutrition, exercise, stress reduction, medications, and intensive monitoring of mother preconceptually and mother and baby during pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum. This comprehensive diabetes seminar will provide a theoretical background and describe clinical applications to help you to better care for and promote a self-care model for women with pre-existing diabetes and pregnancy and gestational diabetes.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this class, participants will be able to:

  1. Define diabetes complicated by pregnancy and gestational diabetes.
  2. Identify that blood glucose control has an effect on the outcome of pregnancy.
  3. Discuss the pathophysiology of diabetes and pregnancy and the risks to mother and infant.
  4. List specialized tests that the pregnant woman with diabetes may undergo.
  5. Identify treatment strategies including nutrition, exercise, stress reduction, and medications.
  6. Discuss areas of special care for the woman and baby during and after labor and delivery.
