DIABETES CARE LECTURE    

 

 

 

Course Description:

Diabetes has been around for centuries.  People with diabetes,  their families, and health care providers have many encouraging and successful management tools and a hopeful future.  Innovative approaches in diabetes care are evident in the sphere of nutrition guidelines and choices including carbohydrate counting, new oral medications and successful combination therapies, new insulin and its administration including insulin pens and the insulin pump,  and advanced glucose monitoring systems. Preventing the onset of diabetes should be a high priority of care and education.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1.                  Review the pathophysiology of  diabetes and the resulting possible complications

2.                  Recognize the basic principles of the diabetes standards of care

3.                  Discuss medical management options

4.                  Discuss current nutrition guidelines for persons with diabetes, including the role of carbohydrates

5.                  Explore diabetes care issues, ie., wound care, hypoglycemia

 

Course Length:  2 – 4 hours

PRESENTATION STRATEGIES:

Lecture, slides, overheads, interacting problem solving, and hands-on experience with diabetes supplies and devices.
