DIABETES MANAGEMENT:

AN APPROACH THAT’S NOT SUGAR COATED

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Diabetes has been around for centuries.  People with diabetes, their families, and health care providers have many encouraging and successful management tools and a hopeful future.  Innovative approaches in diabetes care are evident in the sphere of nutrition guidelines and choices including carbohydrate counting, new oral medications and successful combination therapies, new insulin and its administration including insulin pens and the insulin pump, and advanced glucose monitoring systems. Preventing the onset of diabetes, especially among our nation’s youth, should be a high priority of care and education. Even more exciting is the concept of self-care and self-management as the basis for diabetes treatment and education in this age of managed care.  For the entire health care team, the challenges in diabetes care and management become opportunities for growth and change.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this seminar, the participant will be able to

1.       Relate facts about diabetes, including pathophysiology, screening and diagnosis criteria, and impact and prevention of short and long term complications.

2.       Relate the factors of intensive management, including healthy nutrition, exercise, stress reduction, and medication.

3.       Identify nutritional choices, especially carbohydrate counting, available to persons with diabetes.

4.           Discuss the new technologies available for diabetes treatment and self-   management,      including insulin administration devices as insulin pens and pumps and glucose monitors.
