SCHOOL NURSE DIABETES PROGRAM Course
Description:
The tremendous advances in
diabetes care include numerous approaches and tools which aid the person with
diabetes in managing their disease. School
nurses work with children and teenagers with diabetes who are incorporating the
advanced diabetes tools into their individual health plans.
Therefore it is imperative that school nurses stay current in their
knowledge of diabetes care. Some of
the advanced approaches include a carbohydrate emphasis for the nutrition plan,
use of insulin pens, insulin pumps, the use of a carbohydrate insulin ratio, and
so forth. The purpose of this course
is to discuss the roles and responsibilities of the school nurse as she cares
for students with diabetes who are using the advanced management techniques in
the health care plan. Course
Objectives: Upon completion of this
program, the participant will be able to: 1.
Review the pathophysiology of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, possible
complications, and the overall management plan 2.
Identify the responsibilities of the school nurse in caring for children
with
diabetes 3.
Compare various meal plan options, ie., carbohydrate counting,
exchanges,
calorie points 4.
Discuss management of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia at school 5.
Explore tools to diabetes management, ie., insulin pen, the insulin pump Contact
